littlemissconceptions asked: heheheeheh i was with you till you said Cape Town ;) Cape town is a whole post on its own....I have such a prejudice about such a prejudiced place....but im trying to learn and get rid of my misconceptions....experience proves harder to override though....
Oh, very much so. Cape Town is a strangely schizophrenic city. There are some amazing people, excellent mashup points, and really interesting ideas flowing through. Then there are also the “old families”, living the same way they have for years, with the same prejudices. There are those living in poverty, who have never had an opportunity to engage with the rest of the city.
I don’t deny any of that, but it’s worthwhile exploring as many of its facets as possible.

The Fringe: Cape Town’s Design and Innovation District is launching a monthly designer goods market at Harrington Square (cnr Harrington and Caledon Streets) in The Fringe.
The market is in partnership with key stakeholders in the area, especially the Cape Craft and Design Institute and the Cape Town Fashion Council, Woodheads and the Fledge Creative Catalyst for young designers.
What distinguishes it from other popular weekly markets is its emphasis on locally produced, original handmade products. It will be the perfect place to purchase a wide range crafts, fashion, decor, jewellery and accessories, proudly produced in South Africa.
Aptly named “The Fringe Handmade”, the market will run from 10am to 6pm on 3 December 2011.

just-let-em-eat-cake asked: I like what you have to say. Your NanoWrimo novel, available to be read?
Thanks. Really agree with what you have to say re: POIB, and enjoying your other posts.
Having skimmed through what I wrote, my answer is, sadly, no. Partially because it’s in as-rough-a-draft sort of version as it could possibly be, and partially because some of it is actually (surprisingly) personal, to the point that I’m not comfortable sharing it.
Some of it I was comfortable sharing, which I’ve already posted on my blog, and if you’re interested in getting a sense of (one of) my writing styles, you might want to check out this short story.
ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema had to “vacate his position”, the party’s national disciplinary committee said on Thursday. “The respondent shall vacate his position as the president of the ANC Youth League,” said chairman Derek Hanekom in Johannesburg. Malema was suspended for an effective five years. “Malema damaged the standing of the ANC and South Africa’s international reputation,” said Hanekom. One of the biggest gangs operating in Cape Town, South Africa’s “Americans” (because of their love for the American flag, easy money and the manner of imitating rappers).
“When asked directly where the name came from, he simply responded with another question to us which was meant to be rhetorical, “aren’t you all American, then you already know.” His eyes swept us up and down taking in our attire and jewelry, and after a slight pause he stated “you are rich…you are greedy….and you take what you want.” Not finished with his response, he ferreted for a small piece of paper torn and yellowed in a scrapbook of sorts and presented it to us. He pounded his chest with a clenched fist and proclaimed, “George Bush….my hero…..he will take what he wants.” - Interview with Prisoner / Member
Yes, this exists - much to the surprise of many citizens of the United States who find out. Might be interesting to also quote the interviewer’s response to the etymology of “The Americans”:
That a gang of miscreants would capitalize upon the ill-perceived notion that ALL Americans are as dishonest and malicious as a small portion of our represented nation is, is almost beyond my comprehension. Nevertheless, we as Americans need to understand the tarnished image that we have outside of the United States, and begin to take a serious look at ourselves.
And perhaps read a quick outline of how the gangs operate.

Exploring creative ways to deal with climate change in Cape Town
WHEN: 18 – 20 November 2011
WHERE: Cape Town International Convention Centre, Roof Terrace & via the Internet
WHAT: With COP17/CMP7 hosted in Durban during November and December 2011, climate change issues are in the spotlight. While Climate Change solutions are central to South Africa’s future, we need an increased focus on the issues and challenges faced by Cape Town to become a more resilient city. We also need to take advantage of the many opportunities this represents, such as advancing a low carbon economy, creating jobs and living more sustainably.
For three days in November, Inspiring Change will stimulate fresh thinking and share ideas about our city. This gathering will foster conversations beyond policy in order to point toward new possibilities, moving the discussion away from what we have to give up toward what we can create. It presents a rare opportunity to raise good questions and explore creative solutions in an optimistic and real-world way, with colleagues and leaders who can make practical contributions.
HERE WE GO KIDS!!! See you at Post on Saturday 19th November at 11am to 1pm, 70 Juta Street for some awesome coffee, awesome food and hopefully some new awesome friends!!! *coffee’s on you by the way unless some new friend wants to buy yours ;)*
SPREAD THE WORD AND TELL A TUMBLR FRIEND WOULD YOU?
Slaapstad should get its act together.. :)
