“Here lies the huge irony in this discussion. Persistent pseudonyms aren’t ways to hide who you are. They provide a way to be who you are. You can finally talk about what you really believe; your real politics, your real problems, your real sexuality, your real family, your real self. Much of the support for “real names” comes from people who don’t want to hear about controversy, but controversy is only a small part of the need for pseudonyms. For most of us, it’s simply the desire to be able to talk openly about the things that matter to every one of us who uses the Internet. The desire to be judged—not by our birth, not by our sex, and not by who we work for—but by what we say. Pseudonyms are not new to the computer age. Authors use them all the time. Our founding fathers used them. Anonymous and pseudonymous speech have been part of democratic society since its beginning. What is new is that more and more strangers, whom we have never seen and never spoken to, know our names. What is new is that a name, with just a few minor pieces of information (birthdate, friends names, employer, industry, town…) can in a few seconds provide thousands of personal details about who you are and where you live.” —

If PHP were British → addedbytes.com

Very amusing if you have any coding/programming knowledge.

Class

Perhaps nothing is as important and ingrained in the British psyche as the notion of class and, while there are few opportunities for change within this part of PHP, the changes that there are to be made here are important…

Africa to send troops, food parcels to UK as riots spread → hayibo.com

b-sama:

ETHIOPIA. The African Union today adopted a unilateral resolution to deploy army troops and care packages to England as looting and violence spread from London to other major cities. Spokesperson Charity Khumalo said “We can no longer stand by while these savages tear themselves apart.”

The AU, meeting today in an emergency session to discuss the ongoing rioting in the UK, has declared that they will do “everything in their power to help bring civilisation to England”.

“It’s just so sad, you know?” said Khumalo, speaking from the organisation’s HQ in Addis Ababa. “Sitting here and watching them on TV while their society implodes. We cannot in good conscience remain idle and let it happen.”

The AU has announced a range of initiatives that Africans can get involved with to help alleviate the misery of the English.

“For instance, we have launched an ‘Adopt an English child’ programme,” Khumalo explained, showing journalists brochures featuring the faces of English kids.

#LMAO but seriously though maybe one day…

Probably the best article on the London Riots I’ve read. Possibly the best article overall I’ve read in ages.

"Equity figures a disgrace" - Cosatu → thenewage.co.za

The report, released on Wednesday, showed that although whites made up 73.1% of top management, they made up only 12.1% of the economically active population.

Blacks made up 73.6% of that population, with 12.7% in top management.

Donate to the Save Lives in Drought-Stricken Somalia campaign | Jumo → jumo.com
Your Pledge Matters A personal message from Save Lives in Drought-Stricken Somalia

Your donation will help WFP provide food to more of those in need.  Emergency food centers are being overwhelmed by Somalis fleeing drought-stricken areas, and WFP is urgently raising funds.  WFP is particularly concerned for the millions of malnourished children who are suffering; these children are at risk of death or permanent stunting of their brains and bodies due to hunger.

Please show your support.

Drought in the Horn of Africa -- Petition

You may have seen the pictures of starving people in the Horn of Africa on your TV screens. We are all asking: how can this be happening again? Parts of Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia are facing one of the worst droughts for 60 years, and nearly 12 million people are desperately in need of food, clean water and basic sanitation.

Join me in calling on world leaders to save millions of lives - today and tomorrow.

Despite the urgency of the situation, most world leaders are responding too slowly. Immediate aid is essential. Yet at the same time we must not let them drop the ball on long term solutions as has too often happened in the past.

Take action right now.

Thank you
